Emma's First Steps

I know this isn't the best picture, but it was snapped just before a very big moment
in this little girl's life, just seconds before she took her very first steps!
If you notice, her right hand is just about to let go of the basket.

It was a typical day for the Little Lady and I.
We were playing in her room.
She was pushing her basket full of stuffed animals around.
She crashed it into the wall.
She turned and looked at me and said her version of "crash,"
which is really just the "ash."
She reached out for me.
But then something not so typical happened.
She took THREE steps towards me!
I am one proud Momma.
(this was about a week ago)
Still waiting for her to truly take off
and be a full fledged walker.

Thoughts from the Porch

It's 6:43 in the morning.
I'm in Oklahoma.
I just rocked Emma to sleep while sitting on the porch,
but not just any porch, Papa's porch.
The porch where he started each morning and ended each night.
The porch where he smoked too many cigarettes
and drank too many cups of coffe to even begin to count.
The porch where he has different gadgets and gizmos scattered about,
all of which probably have a story to go along with them.
The porch where the foxes come to eat each night
because they know trusty ole Papa has something laid out for them.
The porch where he kept a gun in the corner just in case.
The porch where he and I once sat and talked about my husband,
our lives together, and our plans for the future.
The porch where he sat on his throne and told many stories,
formulated many thoughts, watched many sunrises and sunsets,
and caused smiles to spread across anyone's face who was ever given
the opportunity to share a moment with an unforgettable man.

I hear birds chirping, the tick tock of two different clocks,
cows mooing, and the fan whipping around in circles.
I see the darkness of the night disappearing and
the light of the morning beginning to shine.
I'm just sitting here taking it all in
the same way an incredible man spent so many hours of the day.
I figure I can spend just a little bit of my time
capturing this Satrrday morning the same way Papa would have.

Although I had only known this man for two and a half short years,
that was more than enough time to learn how incredible he was.
From the moment I met him he welcomed me into his family with open arms.
I quickly realized why my husband always talked so highly of him.
He was a very hard working, intelligent respectable man.
He was an inspiring man who, without even trying,
taught me the importance of getting what you want out of life.
I believe he lived his life the way he truly wanted to.
He was happy on and proud of the little patch of red dirt that he called home.
He loved his family and would have done anything for them.
He played a huge role in raising the man that I am so honored to call my husband.
I see more and more "Papa" qualities in my husband every day,
and I can't think of a better man for him to portray.
So thank you Papa, for every lesson you taught my husband
and every value you instilled in him.
You were a great grandfather and role model to him
and because of the man you helped shape him into
I will forever be grateful to you.

This is my way of saying "Hi Papa,"
and I will continue to say hi every day until we meet again.

Our Day at the Park

Emma and I spent quite a bit of time at the park the other day.
She loves to be outside.  She loves to swing.
She loves things that rock. She loves to crawl over things.
Basically, the park is the perfect place for her.

Now that she's older and more mobile she can enjoy more than just the swings.
She thought the rocking frog and panda were so funny.
She kept crawling back and forth between the two of them,
rocking them, and then squealing with delight.

It took her a few minutes to decide if she was brave enough to dare the tunnel,
but as soon as she got in she loved it.
She liked drumming on the sides of it and sticking her hands through the holes.

I love taking my little Beauty Queen on special outings.
I see many more park dates in our future.

Big Rockabye Sale

Since I recently shared my love for Emma's new Rockabye butterfly
(click here to see that post),
I thought I would let everyone know that Totsy is having a great sale on them right now.
I ordered Emma's during a similar sale.
They usually run about $140, but they are on sale now
for anywhere between $70-$90 depending on which one you choose.
There are several different styles to choose from for both girls and boys.

Just thought I would share since I came across it and have experience with the product.

Emma's Everyday Life

Just a few pictures highlighting some of my favorite moments from the past few weeks.

The night Daddy came home.

Cruising along on the beach.

Shooting her guns.

Showing off her Sassiness.  She often has to have two headbands on.

Princess Emma

Giving Daddy a high five, or an "up top" as we call it.

Going in for the kiss.

"How old is Emma?"

Wordless Wednesday: Streets of Okinawa Part 1

I have tried to get in the habit of taking the camera with me when I take Emma for a walk.
I figure it's a good time for me to work on my photography skills
and to capture everyday life in Okinawa.

A random closed off stair case along a sidewalk.

There are stray cats every where...

It can be 100 degrees outside but many Okinawans will still be covered from head to toe.
They try to limit their skin's exposure to the sun as much as possible.

Best burgers on island...

Not sure that I want to find out what this place is...

Birthday Tradition

Every year for Emma's birthday her Daddy and I are going to give her a rose
with a ribbon tied around it for each year she has blessed us with her beautiful smile.
Obviously this year's rose only had one ribbon tied around it,
and next year's will have two, and so on for each following year.
This year's rose is currently hanging upside down and drying out,
which I will do with each birthday rose we give her.
In just a few short years she will have a very meaningful bouquet.
I look forward to going through each rose with her when she is older
and telling her the special story that goes along with that particular birthday and year.

Cake, Presents, and Rain

Emma's birthday party didn't quite go as I planned,
but I figure if there's one to mess up
it's the first one since she won't remember it anyway.
Instead of being cute and girly like I wanted it to be,
with pink and flowers every where, it was basically just one big puddle.
Just scheduling it was a hassle since Daddy was gone
and his return date is always subject to change.
Either way, a date was picked and we decided it should be on the beach
because how many one year olds have a birthday party on the beach?
Well, Daddy and I should have known better.
Nothing ever goes right for us so of course it rained,
and rained, and rained some more.
Instead of being under the shelter to just eat and open presents,
we were stuck under it the entire time.
Luckily, Emma didn't seem to mind.
She loved crawling through the puddles and getting sprayed
from the mist being blown through the shelter,
which is why her pretty little party dress and bow did not last long.
It may not have been the party I envisioned,
but the birthday girl, Miss Emma Claire,
was showered with love which is all that really matters.

Emma decided to help herself to lunch...

Trying to really get the party started...

She didn't really dig into her cake and make a big mess like Daddy and I thought she would.
I think part of this was because she was tired.  She didn't have much of a morning nap
and it was getting close to her afternoon nap time so she was kind of in a sleepy daze.
Also, every time she touched the cake everyone got excited, made some type of noise or clapped,
which I think scared her rather than encouraged her to keep digging in.
Either way, the cake was adorable and delicious.

Because of the rain, we only had her open the presents from people that were actually at the party.
I ended up unwrapping the rest of them later that afternoon just to get them out of the wet boxes.

Better luck next year...
